India US Trade: After Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on exports from India to the US, India's chances of buying defense equipment from the US have diminished. However, India is not currently considering any retaliatory steps. A Bloomberg report states that India has informed the US that it is not interested in buying the F-35 stealth fighter jet. Let us tell you that this is the same aircraft that Donald Trump offered to sell to India during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the US in February this year.
India is making this plan
The report quoted officials as saying that the Narendra Modi government is more interested in partnerships to design and manufacture defense equipment at the domestic level. According to the report, India does not want to respond immediately to Trump's announcement of 25% tariff at the moment. However, India is considering some options to maintain good relations with the White House, including increasing imports from the US.
Trump had made a big announcement
Donald Trump has said that the US has a huge trade deficit with India. He said, "India is our friend, but in the last few years we have done very little trade with it, because India's tariffs (import duties) are the highest in the world. Also, the toughest and most disturbing non-economic trade sanctions are also in place there." Trump also alleged that India has been buying most of the military equipment from Russia and is one of the biggest countries buying energy from Russia and China. He said, "At a time when the world wants Russia to stop violence in Ukraine, all this is not right." Donald Trump has announced that India will have to face 25 percent tariff and related penalties from August 1. Trump also expressed displeasure over the strong relations between India and Russia and sarcastically said that both the countries can handle their "sinking economies" together. He said, "I don't care what India does to Russia. If they want to improve their weak economies together, then do it." Trump reiterated, "We have done very little trade with India because their tariffs are very high—the highest in the world."
Emphasis on increasing the strength of the Air Force
The Indian Air Force needs 42 squadrons to deal with any threat from China and Pakistan. But at present the number of fighter squadrons of the Air Force has come down to 31. To increase the combat capability of the Air Force, the Indian government may soon finalize the deal to purchase 114 fighter aircraft. The Indian Air Force still operates Mirage-2000, Jaguar, MiG-29, Su-30mki as well as Rafale fighter aircraft. MiG-21 has still been retired.
